What type of test is required? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all passengers ages 2 and above entering the United States, or transiting through the United States, must have proof of a negative Coronavirus (COVID-19) test. The test can be taken at most 3 days before initial departure point and can be a nucleic acid amplification test (e.g., PCR test) or viral antigen test (including a rapid antigen test) that has been approved by local health authority. Antibody tests will not be accepted. Documentation may be paper or electronic copy and must include the name and contact information for the laboratory or healthcare personnel who performed the test. Test results may be required to be shown again upon landing. Alternatively, passengers who had a positive COVID-19 test in the past 90 days and have since recovered may bring a copy of their positive viral COVID-19 test result and a letter from a licensed health provider or public health official stating that he or she has been cleared for travel.
Where can travelers get tested at their destination? Testing is already in place in many destinations/hotels. We anticipate more testing opportunities in destination/hotels will become available, making this more convenient for travelers. We are compiling a list of the hotels we have confirmed that are providing on-site testing with varying requirements and processes, as well as those that are offering free/reduced rates for quarantine periods as needed. Please check back regularly as this information is changing/coming in quickly.
What is the cost of the test and do travelers have to pay for the test? Depending on the destination/location, test costs will vary. Many hotels are covering the cost or it is included in the package price. For all others, the cost will be the responsibility of the traveler. More information to come.
Are children exempt? All passengers two years of age and older traveling into the U.S. must provide proof of a negative test.
What if the traveler has already been vaccinated? If a traveler has had a positive COVID-19 test in the past 90 days and has since recovered, they may bring a copy of a positive viral COVID-19 test result and a letter from a licensed health provider or public health official stating that they have been cleared for travel.
What if you’ve already been vaccinated? At this time, even if the traveler has been vaccinated, they will need to provide a negative COVID-19 test before boarding, taken no more than three days prior to departure.
Is a negative antibody test sufficient? No. A negative test result from a viral test (excludes antibody tests) within three days of their return flight to the U.S. is required. Travelers must bring a paper or electronic proof to the airport.
What happens if travelers get a positive test? Travelers are required to quarantine before returning to the U.S. For travelers flying with Delta, Delta’s Health Acknowledgment(completed at check-in) requires customers to certify that they have not been exposed to, diagnosed with or tested positive for COVID within the past 14 days.
Will there be monetary assistance to help offset the cost of having to quarantine? Delta Vacations is not offering monetary assistance for those required to quarantine; however, please check the travel insurance policy to determine if there is any support included. If the traveler tests positive for COVID-19 while in destination, hotels are required to offer quarantine rooms at a reduced rate; please contact a Delta Vacations Specialist at 1-800-800-1504 to modify the trip and rebook the return flight. Terms and Conditions apply.
What will travel protection cover? Coverage will depend on the coverage provided in the purchased travel protection policy. If the customer has purchased travel protection coverage through Delta Vacations, please click here for more information.
How long do travelers have to quarantine before allowed re-entry to the U.S.? If someone in the booking test positive for COVID-19, the travelers are required to self-isolate before returning to the U.S. We are awaiting clarification on the requirements, but expect this will be 7-10 days based on current CDC guidance. Please note that Delta’s Health Acknowledgment (completed at check-in) requires customers to certify that they have not been exposed to, diagnosed with or tested positive for COVID within the past 14 days.
If the traveler doesn’t get the test result within 3 days, will they be denied boarding? If a passenger does not provide documentation of a negative test or recovery, or chooses not to take a test, the airline must deny boarding to the passenger. How about travel from U.S. territories, like U.S. Virgin islands & Puerto Rico? U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are not considered international travel, and therefore they are exempt from this testing requirement.
How long will these requirements last? There is no stated end date at this time.
How do I go about canceling or changing my trip? The new requirement for COVID-19 testing for all international arrivals is effective January 26, 2021.
When does the order go into effect? The new requirement for COVID-19 testing for all international arrivals is effective January 26, 2021.
